Sauvignon blanc
The sort Sauvignon originates from France. One of the best known white varietals in the World. Bordeaux give dry and Sautern yields sweet wines from this sort, or even combined with Muscadelle or Semillon; also grown very well in the Loire Valley. Became rather popular in many winegrowing countries; however it is not planted in large growing surfaces. This varietal can be very well grown in cooler regions such as: South-Tirol, Burgenland and Steiermark and also out of Europe, in New-Zealand, South-Afrika and Chile.
In Hungary it found new home in Etyek-Buda and Neszmély. Earlier was grown to ferment sparkling wines, but now the still white wines are up to the international expectations.
There are new plantations in Budajenő that will provide the needed quality a volume of this sort. Size of the new plantation: 14,6 Hectares. Higher number of stocks and lower yields per stock characterizes the new gardens. We use the “umbrella-structure” and steel holding system. Yields vary between 5-10 t/ha depending on the area, plantation age and vintage. Harvest is done periodically from the second part of September to the middle of October from 18-26 Mm grade.
Grows very fast and strongly, has consistent leafage and chunky branches, second and third shoots might appear. To bring up a Sauvignon plantation to give yields, is something similar to raise a wild horse to a trained horse.
Here we grow the C297 clone give high quality, and its smaller clusters do not help us in encumbering the stocks.
Apart of the vitality the young stocks are sensitive against hard frost. The consistent leafage and the thick clusters are sensitive to brown rot and many illnesses.
